  Task 1

The two plans below show a museum in 1998 and in 2008 after its re-development.

  【Introduction】

The two floor plans illustrate a museum’s changed arrangement in 2008 compared with what was in 1998. Overall, the change was not marginal.

  【Body】

In 2008, the museum still had only the south entrance, which was on its north-south axis [这句话看似简单,但是信息意义重大:首先,说明了这个博物馆的入口没有变化,同时,又说明了入口的位置], and the counter where tickets are sold remained straight to the entrance. All other parts were laid out in different positions. First, passing the ticket counter, [经典的“动词分词”作(前置)“状语”现象]a visitor [地图写法之一:引入一个虚拟的人]would[注意时态]arrive at the garden, the central area of the museum[经典的“同位语”现象]. It in 2008 wasexpanded with two additions – a fountain and the café’s seats. Second, behind the garden was the toilet[经典表示方位的介词短语置于句首时的“倒装”现象], replacing the café, and the café was moved to the west section and replaced the exhibition area. The exhibition area was definitely not gone, it, with the toilet and the area for bags and coats removed [“独立主格结构”作“状语”的现象], occupied the east section.

  Task 2

The qualities a person needs to become truly successful cannot be learned at a university or similar academic institutions.

To what extent do you agree or disagree?

  【Position: Disagree】

  【Introduction】

To some people, it is dubious that tertiary education actually prepares a person for a successful adulthood. I am an opponent of those skeptics.

  【Body】

First, institutions of higher education are not the ivory tower; instead, 论证方法:类比一次→ college years is the rehearsal of the later adulthood.类比二次→ Just as life has its ups and downs, the three or four years of college have the highlights and disappointments. As such, a young adult gets used to dealing with fluctuations ←形成指代,建立语句间的关系 and gets ready for life’s blessings and lemons. For example,类比三次→ that a work project may be challenging and trap a worker is like that an examination may be difficult and frustrate a student. With such experience ←形成指代,建立语句间的关系during college transferred to work, ←独立主格结构作状语an adult is enabled to cope with unfavorable situations. It is important that the quality of beingundefeatable in hardship ←形成指代,建立语句间的关系 is fostered in one’s early twenties, because the quality is essential in achieving success in life.

Meanwhile, people may be distracted by developing the “soft” skills – personal traits; ←反馈上一段as a matter of fact, 这一段的立论句→ their focus should return to the “hard” skills – expertise. An eloquent lawyer must be a master of reasoning; a surgeon who has saved many lives must be able to manipulate the scalpel; a proficient IT engineer musthave a good command of codes. The principle is that high levels of professional skills are pivotal if one has the ambition to succeed. Universities are where these skills are developed and sharpened; there are no alternative places.

  【Conclusion】

It has long been a misconception among some people that higher education is a useless experience for anyone who desires a successful life. In fact, universities have historically been the cradle of numerous successful people.
