  GMAT61—安装运动器械能保全民健康?

  The short passage:

61.The following appeared in the letters-to-the-editor section of a local newspaper:

"Muscle Monthly, a fitness magazine that regularly features pictures of bodybuilders using state-of-the-art exercise machines, frequently sells out, according to the owner of Skyview Newsstand. To help maximize fitness levels in our town's residents, we should, therefore, equip our new community fitness center with such machines."

Discuss how well reasoned ... etc.

  The sample answer:

It is suggested that machines featured in magazines called Muscle Monthly should be equipped in new community center in order to enhance residents’ fitness levels (开头段句需要很好的概括argument和fact). Two supportive evidences are afforded: one is that pictures of bodybuilders using these machines are printed in these magazines and the other is that these magazines are well-sold in local areas. Yet, without clarifying two aspects, this argument tends to be implausible.

The pictures of bodybuilders in these magazines are likely to persuade readers that these machines are effective in shaping excellent figures (在段首句让步一下逻辑推理的合理之处,为后面反驳做铺垫). Yet, the persuasiveness of these pictures is weak as some readers might doubt that it is the combination of multiple efforts that help them perfect their body shapes. A well-balanced diet, regular workout and positive mind tend to make a difference to that. These attractive pictures incline to be posed ones for advertising purposes(细节补充时要注意推理的层次,不要堆积信息).Unless more verification on the effectiveness of these machines is presented, this argument of equipping these machines is questionable.

The other assumption is more questionable (先简单概括,留个悬念).Machines pictured in magazines are used to build muscles rather than to improve the well-being of all citizens. Suppose a resident has high blood pressure, these machines are unlikely to relieve his symptoms but exasperate them instead. Similarly, a citizen whose doctor suggests him work out gently is less likely to take risks by using these machines (这两个例子考虑的角度不同,体现举例子的类型的‘饱满’). Clearly, the benevolence these machines could create to the fitness of the general public is overstated.

  Conclusion

  (略)
