在雅思听说读写的各项评分标准中，coherence具有重要地位。

　　表现条理性、连贯性、逻辑性的有各种逻辑关系词。

　　本篇文章主要介绍while的用法，利用while在有生词的情况推断出答案句大致的含义。

　　首先来梳理一下while的各种含义，这里我们以英文解释来进行学习。

　　不同等级表示雅思对应分数段，大致是 ：A2—4分以下；B1—4~5分；B2—5.5~6.5分；C1—7~8分；C2—8~9分。

　　(A2) during the time that; or at the same time as; 表示“当…时候”, 相当于 when, as, whilst…，这个含义比较简单。

　　That same year, while in the lower St Lawrence River region, he took some photographs of the construction of the Intercolonial Railway. (C14-2-1)（当在下游的时候）

　　Managers must learn how to achieve the delicate balance of allowing employees the freedom to enjoy themselves at work while simultaneously maintaining high levels of performance (Tews et al., 2013). （C14-1-3）（既使员工享受工作同时又维持高效率）

　　(B2) despite the fact that; although; 表示让步 ，“尽管”。

　　这个含义在雅思阅读之中遍地都是，却又是同学们比较容易忽略的。因为在印象中while的“然而”“但是”的含义过于强大。

　　表示“尽管”时常放句首，中间用逗号“，”隔开，真正想强调的转折是在后半句。

　　While it seems likely that employees’ reactions to their job characteristics could be affected by a predisposition to view their work environment negatively, no evidence exists to support this hypothesis (Spector et al., 2000). （C14-1-3）（尽管看似…, 但没有证据证明这种假设）

　　While it is true that television documentaries are becoming ever more detailed and impressive, and many natural history specimens are on display in museums, there really is nothing to compare with seeing a living creature in the flesh, hearing it, smelling it, watching what it dose and having the time to absorb details. ( C14-2-2)（ 尽管纪录片有很好的效果…, 但都不能与见到活生生的生物相比较）

　　(B1) compared with the fact that; but; 表示对比转折，“而”“然而”“但是”，常在句中，这也是小作文当中用于数据对比描述的常用词。

　　Between 1990 and 1998~road haulage increased by 19.4%, while during the same period rail haulage decreased by 43.5%. (C10-2-1) （公路运货量增长，然而铁路运输减少）

　　Intrinsically motivated free provides the child with true autonomy, while guided play is an avenue through which parents and educators can provide more targeted learning experiences. (C14-3-3)（以自由为内在动机的游戏提供真正的自主性，而引导性游戏提供更有针对性的学习体验）

　　我们可以看到尽管while既可以表示让步，又可以表示对比转折，但是一句之内的前后两个半句的含义总是相反的！

意识到这一点，在做题过程中就更加事半功倍了。比如：

　　判断题6 The opening of the Suez Canal meant that steam ships could travel between Britain and China faster than clippers. （C13-4-1）

　　有两个潜在判断点，一是opening是否导致that后的内容，二是导致的结果是不是steam ships比clippers更快。

　　回到原文，while表示让步，逗号前后情况相反，stem ships可以利用quick and direct route (canal), 但是sailing ships 不能用canal。

　　两个潜在考点都对，答案选TRUE。

　　判断题14 Local gulls and migrating arctic terns behave in the same way when offered food. （C11-3-2）

　　behave in the same way是判断点。

　　回到原文定位，看到有许多生词，比较妨碍理解，但是看到while应该知道两种动物反应方式肯定是相反、不同的。

　　选FALSE。
