The increase in the production of consumer goods results in damage to the natural environment. What are the causes of this? What can be done to solve this problem?

Introduction

With more consumer goods produced, the environmental problem has been intensified. Personally, behind this problem are two predominant culprits, and this issue can be promisingly tackled.

Ø intensify vt.

Reasons

To start with, the surging population should be responsible for this phenomenon. This is mainly because the huge population has naturally brought the increasing demands for consumer goods. To meet such needs, people are in dire need of not only a colossal quantity of raw materials but also vast areas of land for establishing an overwhelming number of factories, both of which contribute to the environment deterioration. A typical example is that more trees are cut down for furniture and fuels are tapped for electricity production, incurring deforestation and soil degradation. Besides, it is clever advertising, which usually exaggerates the functions and features of products, that lures consumers into buying new consumer goods and gradually following the trend of the throw-away culture. This has also naturally brought the increase in the production of goods, which wreaks havoc on the natural environment.

Ø colossal adj.

Ø overwhelming adj.

Ø deterioration n. 恶化

Ø deforestation n.

Ø degradation n. 退化

Ø exaggerate vt. 夸大

Ø lure vt. 引诱

Ø wreak havoc on vi.

Solutions

Considering the gravity of this issue, corresponding schemes can be put on the agenda. The first imperative approach is that the government should issue policies regarding subsidisation to motivate businesses to develop new products by tapping renewable or recyclable materials. Meanwhile, additional tax can be imposed upon the factories that discharge tonnes of swage and toxic gases. Driven by such policies, producers are more likely to manufacture more environmentally-friendly products. Additionally, public-service advertisements can be made to publicise the hazards of the throw-away culture, which can raise consumers’ awareness of purchasing goods more rationally.

Ø gravity n. 严重性

Ø imperative adj.

Ø subsidisation n. 补贴

Ø tap vt.

Ø impose vt.

Ø swage n. 污水

Ø hazard n. 害处

Conclusion

In the light of the above, since possible factors and feasible remedies have been clarified, it is advised that relevant parties take actions immediately.
