本期节目话题背景

最近有同学问了我这样一道题,“Describe an important event you celebrated”。

I have celebrated many important events in my life and I think one of the most memorable ones was my first birthday party in China, which happened in July 2013.

I came to China in March 2013 and was hired to be a part-time English teacher. For the first several months in China, I wasn’t happy at all. One was because as a part-time teacher, I used to go to work at 5.30 PM. It sounds very stress free but it was extremely boring because I didn’t know anyone in China and I had nothing to do for the whole day. Also, when you are a part-time employee, you don’t have the chance to get to know all your colleagues and they don’t see you as part of the company.

Finally, my first apartment in China was really disgusting and it was in a 40-year-old building with no elevator and no cleaning services and didn’t even have a toilet.

But things started to change after May. One of teachers at my company had to go back Canada due to a family emergency and I was immediately promoted to full-time, which was fantastic. Because being a full time means higher salary, more social opportunities with colleagues and students, and I quickly made many friends soon after.

So at the end of June, I had become quite a popular person at my school and students found out my birthday is in July. So one of them decided to organize a semi-surprise birthday party for me. We held the party at a BBQ restaurant and at least twenty showed up, students, teachers, students friends, etc.

The party itself was nothing special, lots of food, lots of beer and lots of laughs. But personally, it was special to me because it represented a milestone and new chapter in my life.
