雅思写作普遍是中国考生的软肋。雅思写作题库中曾考过让考生谈一谈广告对产品的影响类的题目,采用Do you agree or disagree……的问法。
Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? Most advertisements make the product seem much better than it really is. Use specific reasons or examples to support your ideas.
In our daily lives we are surrounded by advertisement in the street, at the mall, on TV, and on the sides of office buildings. Sometimes it seems as if we cannot escape from them. As a result, people can't help but wonder whether the advertisements reflect the reality of the products.
Some people believe that the majority of advertisements allow something to look superior to the actual product. However, I found this rather problematic. The advertisers and manufactures just want to showcase the best side of their products and show how their product is better than the competition. To be frank, there is no evidence that such advertisements deceive customers. Even though advertisements include pictures and words designed to entice customers, it is only natural for a company to want to make their products desirable. If they made the product seem worse than it is in real life, the company would go bankrupt.
On the other hand, there are some cases where advertising crosses the line. Some advertisements are misleading or outright fabrications. For example, some parts of items shown in advertisements cannot be found on the real product, and some purported effects of a product never actually come to pass. But if the products are too different from what is shown in the advertisement, most companies will let the customers know by including fine print. Otherwise, the advertisements will be banned according to The Advertisement Law of the PRC.
Personally, I believe that some advertisements are misleading but most advertisements are accountable and valid. But at the same time, it is much better for customers to learn how to discern truth from fiction in advertising by themselves. And of course, blatant lies in advertisements should be punished by law.
